The premise is simple: a guy on a boat cooks food. At its core, that what this blog is. Me living on my boat, playing with food. Easy enough, right?
But this blog, and all that it puts out into the world, I see as an affirmation to you – that you can do it, too.
The problem with all our much-adored food blogs and cooking shows is that they’re cooking in spacious island kitchens with pantries, double ovens, acres of counter space, and every tool imaginable. Spaces large enough for an echo or to misplace a blender. There is a certain luxury of space and storage that simply isn’t the reality of many would-be home cooks out there. So on another, very real level, this page – this community – is less about a guy on a boat than a testament to the idea that if a guy cooking in a small galley with very real space limitations can do it, so can you. This is proof that you CAN create fun, compelling food at home, with or without space.
So sally forth, be you of the afterthought kitchens of New York, or cramped kitchens in first homes or even those of ballyhooed kitchens that require steps. Sally forth, knowing that if a guy in a tiny galley can do it, so can you.
Together, we’ll go through foods and techniques and recipes ranging from simple to more advanced, but always with a wink, and always with clear explanations. We’ll challenge assumptions; we’ll be subversive. And I promise you this: if a guy on a boat can do it, so can you.
Let’s go surprise some people. Let’s go shiver some dinners.
Give me your dispirited, your space-poor,
Your huddled masses yearing to eat microwave-free,
The poor souls of crammed kitchen drawers.
Send these, the aspiring gourmands, to me
I lift my lamp beside the oven door.
Welcome to a new land of empowered food, born on the water.
